From Kevin Smith, Trumbull, CT:
Cancer strikes so many families and, sadly, mine was not immune. My mother succumbed to the disease after a six month battle and she passed in January of my senior year of high school. College seemed distant, almost unattainable, but the time for it was fast approaching as life continued on.
My father was not part of my support system and it looked as though college would have to wait.
In the spring of senior year, I received word that I was nominated for the Irving Moorin Scholarship, which I was blessed to receive. Thanks to their support, college came that fall and a journey began which continued for many years thereafter. I eventually received a Masters And Sixth Year Degree in Education and I am now enjoying my 24th year of teaching elementary school, in part, because the Irving Moorin Scholarship set a young man in motion and pushed wind into his sails.
